The lower RPM areas can easily be optimized without auto advance, you can optimize cruise low load maps, and higher load spool maps without knock easily with a 8.5 to 1 TT engine. Right when you get to the area where running more timing would add power, the stock knock system no longer offers retard or advance from knock sensor signals. You have to leave some power on the table to keep the high RPM safe with only the stock system. If you add a live knock system that functions in the real problem knock areas, you can run the edge and the system can keep knock in check.
